Arsenal explores move for Vinicius Jr amid Real Madrid contract uncertainty

Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinicius Jr
Arsenal is exploring a potential move for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, whose future at the Spanish club remains uncertain. Discussions between Real Madrid and the Brazilian’s agents regarding a contract renewal, which would extend beyond his current deal expiring in 2027, have not yet resulted in an agreement. Arsenal’s owners have reportedly approved the idea of pursuing a deal for the player, who is considered a top target to strengthen the team’s attack.
According to sources familiar with the situation, a move to Arsenal appeals to Vinicius Jr if he does not renew his contract with Madrid. If the attacker decides to join Arsenal, an agreement on personal terms is anticipated. A person with knowledge of Mikel Arteta‘s perspective stated that the Arsenal manager is very keen on Vinicius Jr, indicating that Arsenal would be ready to act if a renewal with Madrid does not happen.
Financial differences between Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr are significant, with further conversations scheduled to address the matter. The 26-year-old player is expected to return to training soon, and the upcoming days are considered crucial for determining the outcome of his contract situation. Three potential options for Vinicius Jr include extending his contract with Madrid, waiting until next summer to leave as a free agent, or joining Arsenal.
Contract negotiations and Arsenal’s strategy
Vinicius Jr joined Real Madrid in 2018 from Flamengo. He agreed to new terms in 2022, extending his contract until 2027. At that time, his camp favoured a shorter renewal to allow for renegotiation of improved terms sooner, given his strong performance, including scoring the decisive goal in a Champions League final.
In January 2025, Real Madrid’s general manager, Jose Angel Sanchez, and chief scout, Juni Calafat, met with Vinicius Jr, his agents, and his father to discuss a new contract. Madrid proposed an offer which Vinicius Jr’s side rejected. A counter-offer from Vinicius Jr’s representatives was subsequently rejected by the club. Reports in April 2025 suggested a renewal was close, but Vinicius Jr’s entourage denied these claims.
Sources indicate that Vinicius Jr was seeking a package that included a base salary, performance-related bonuses, and a renewal bonus, the latter being a point of contention with Madrid. While Madrid has argued against exceeding their wage cap, Vinicius Jr’s camp views a renewal bonus as a way to increase his earnings, drawing comparisons to teammate Kylian Mbappe‘s signing bonus. Madrid has resisted the renewal bonus due to concerns about setting a precedent within the squad, though Vinicius Jr is reportedly open to lowering his demands to reach an agreement.
Arsenal has reportedly been making moves behind the scenes for months, capitalising on the ongoing contract dispute. Key figures at Arsenal have communicated to Vinicius Jr’s representatives that he would be a central player in a project led by Arteta, a team that won the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final. Arsenal is prepared to make an exception to its usual salary structure for Vinicius Jr, potentially including a sign-on bonus and image rights.
Real Madrid faces the risk of losing Vinicius Jr as a free agent next summer if his contract expires, a scenario that some within the club are reportedly concerned about. Arsenal hopes to leverage this situation to negotiate a reduced transfer fee. The club’s owners have approved the anticipated financial figures for a potential deal, believing that Vinicius Jr’s arrival could significantly boost Arsenal’s brand and commercial appeal. Arsenal views him as a player who can genuinely add a new dimension to their title-winning team.
Arteta’s transfer expectations
Mikel Arteta has indicated that he expects further squad reinforcements in the coming weeks. Following Arsenal’s 4-1 victory over Girona in a friendly match, Arteta stated that the club would not “sit still” as they prepare to defend their Premier League title. He emphasised the team’s ambition to improve and increase internal competition.
Arsenal has already signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier and forward Christos Tzolis, with defender Piero Hincapie also joining permanently after a loan spell. Tzolis scored on his debut against Girona, with Kai Havertz, Max Dowman, and Gabriel Jesus also contributing goals. While Arteta did not comment on specific transfer reports concerning Vinicius Jr or Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes, he affirmed the club’s intention to make movements in the transfer market.
Some figures within Real Madrid reportedly favour selling Vinicius Jr this summer to avoid losing him as a free agent in 2027. The final decision rests with president Florentino Perez, who has been a strong supporter of Vinicius Jr. Manager Jose Mourinho is also said to like the player and has been in contact with him, but will respect any decision made by the club.

Arsenal’s determination is also evident in their decision not to actively pursue Bradley Barcola, despite previous interest, as Liverpool is reportedly preparing an opening offer for the France international. Arsenal is operating under the impression that Vinicius Jr would be open to joining them.
The club has conducted intensive work on the mission to sign Vinicius Jr, acknowledging that a deal of this magnitude and ambition will be challenging to finalise. Arsenal being considered a plausible destination for Vinicius Jr is seen as a significant development, highlighting the club’s progress since their last high-profile signing of Mesut Ozil in 2013.
