Galle victory boosts India’s World Test Championship prospects

India secured a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle, with Manav Suthar achieving his maiden ten-wicket haul. This win elevates India to fifth place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Standings, with a PCT of 53.33. The result is significant for India’s aspirations to qualify for next year’s WTC Final at The Oval, especially after a previous 2-0 home series defeat against South Africa in the current cycle. Sri Lanka currently holds the sixth position with a PCT of 33.33.
Devdutt Padikkal was named Player of the Match for his total of 211 runs in the Test. In the first innings, Padikkal scored 167 runs, while KL Rahul contributed 82 runs, helping India accumulate 462 runs. In the second innings, Padikkal added a valiant 84 runs off 128 deliveries.
Suthar’s impactful performance
On Day 4, Sri Lanka, chasing a target of 372, had lost four wickets by stumps. Dhananjaya de Silva (59) and Sonal Dinusha (84) formed a crucial partnership in the middle order. Ravindra Jadeja broke this stand by dismissing de Silva in the first session of Day 5. Manav Suthar, who made his Test debut against Afghanistan in June, then took his second six-wicket haul, finishing with bowling figures of 6/55. Suthar was instrumental in dismantling the home team’s batting lineup, securing the final four wickets, including that of Sonal Dinusha, to complete his ten-wicket match haul.
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance. Vice-captain KL Rahul also commented on the win, stating, “We were trying to get the wickets as quickly as we could. Obviously, they had a decent partnership and once we broke that partnership, we felt like we were right back in the game, and we could, once we got into their tail, we knew that we could get the wickets early.” Rahul added that the victory would instill confidence ahead of upcoming matches.
Team composition and future outlook
The win in Galle has helped solidify the composition of India’s Test squad. The team has identified a potential No. 3 batsman in Devdutt Padikkal and an all-weather finger spinner in Manav Suthar. The pace attack has also shown improvement, with Prasidh Krishna emerging as a significant positive for the Shubman Gill-led unit. Despite the absence of key players like Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Sai Sudharsan due to injury concerns, the team managed to perform effectively.
Gautam Gambhir and Sri Lanka coach Gary Kirsten, both of whom played significant roles in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, engaged in discussions about Test cricket coaching. Kirsten highlighted that both coaches share similar values regarding Test cricket and are focused on helping their respective teams play the format effectively. He noted that the conversations were primarily about the challenges of coaching and how to approach Test cricket, rather than reminiscing about past achievements.
The series will now move to Colombo for the second Test, which is scheduled to begin on August 23 and conclude on August 27 at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground.
