India’s Commonwealth Games Boxing Performance

Indian boxers achieved a significant milestone at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing a total of ten medals. This haul included seven gold medals and three silver medals, marking the country’s most successful boxing campaign in the history of the event. The performance highlighted the growing strength in Indian boxing, particularly within the women’s categories.

Among the gold medalists were Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), and Arundhati Choudhary (70kg) in the women’s competition. In the men’s events, Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg) also claimed gold. Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain, Jadumani Singh, and Narender Berwal contributed to the medal tally with silver medals.

Preeti Pawar, who won gold in the women’s 54kg category by defeating Canada’s Scarlett Delgado, described her Commonwealth Games debut as a crucial learning experience. She views this success as preparation for upcoming competitions, including the Asian Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Pawar’s hometown, Bhiwani, known as ‘Mini Cuba’ for its boxing culture, has produced notable talents like Vijender Singh, Jitender Kumar, and Akhil Kumar.

Anticipating the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya

Following their success in Glasgow, the Indian boxing contingent is now focusing on the more rigorous challenge of the Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The Boxing Federation of India president, Ajay Singh, noted that the Asian Games are comparable to the Olympics in terms of competition level, given the presence of strong boxing nations like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, and North Korea.

These continental powerhouses have consistently performed well in World Championships and the Olympics. Notable boxers expected to compete include Uzbekistan’s Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov and Bobo-Usmon Baturov, as well as Kazakhstan’s Kairat Yeraliyev and Ablaikhan Zhussupov. The Indian team will face an additional challenge as two of their Commonwealth Games gold medalists, Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), will not participate because their weight categories are not included in the Asian Games program.

The women’s head coach, Santiago Nieva, acknowledged the strength of the upcoming competition but affirmed that the team is on the right path. He emphasized that the boxers are aware they cannot rest on their recent achievements. India’s previous performance at the Asian Games yielded one silver medal and three bronze medals. The upcoming Asian Games will serve as a significant indicator of India’s progress and potential for the 2028 Olympics.

Individual Journeys and Future Outlook

Preeti Pawar’s journey in boxing has involved overcoming various obstacles. She experienced a bout of hepatitis, which impacted her training. Despite these challenges, she has shown resilience, securing a silver medal at the Khelo India Games in 2020 and a gold in 2021. She also earned a bronze medal at the Asian Games, where she defeated Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan before losing to Chang Yuan of China in the semi-finals.

Pawar reflected on her early reluctance towards boxing due to the physical demands of training, but credited the continuous support and motivation from her father and uncle, who is a coach, for her continued involvement in the sport. She expressed pride in her achievements, including representing India at the Commonwealth Games and winning a gold medal. The strong boxing culture in Haryana, particularly in Bhiwani, with active parental involvement and numerous boxing clubs, is seen as a key factor in developing talent.

The success at the Commonwealth Games has instilled confidence within the Indian boxing contingent. The team’s strong mindset and bonding were highlighted as crucial elements in their recent triumphs.

The upcoming Asian Games will provide a comprehensive assessment of the Indian boxers’ capabilities against some of the world’s top competitors.
