Sri Lanka Tests crucial for India’s WTC hopes, spin leadership: Murali Kartik

Former India spinner Murali Kartik has emphasised the critical nature of the upcoming Sri Lanka Test series for India‘s World Test Championship (WTC) aspirations and the development of its future spin bowling leaders. Kartik believes that Kuldeep Yadav requires consistent support as Ravindra Jadeja‘s career approaches its later stages.
India is currently fifth in the World Test Championship standings, having secured four wins and four defeats in the current cycle. The team aims to revitalise its campaign following a 0-2 series loss to South Africa, starting with two Tests in Sri Lanka. Following this series, India is scheduled to tour New Zealand for two Tests in November, before hosting Australia for a five-Test series in January-February.
Kartik highlighted that the Sri Lanka series will also serve as a significant examination of India‘s spin resources, particularly given the transition within the spin department. He noted that Ravindra Jadeja, despite his contributions to Indian cricket, is in the twilight years of his career, making the identification of new spin leaders crucial.
Kuldeep Yadav’s Role and Consistency
Kartik stressed the importance of a clearly defined role and consistent backing for Kuldeep Yadav within the Test squad. He believes that despite Kuldeep’s match-winning capabilities, he has not received adequate sustained support from previous team managements to firmly establish himself in Test cricket. Since Gautam Gambhir assumed the role of coach in July 2024, Kuldeep has participated in six Tests.
Kartik pointed out that Kuldeep’s omission from India‘s five-Test tour of England had previously raised questions about his position in the red-ball setup, despite his reputation as a wicket-taking spinner. He dismissed concerns regarding Kuldeep’s batting limitations, asserting that his primary value lies in his ability to take wickets as a spin bowler. Kartik mentioned that Kuldeep is not a poor batter and has shown he can occupy the crease, even as a nightwatchman.
The former spinner also noted that Manav Suthar‘s debut against Afghanistan was encouraging for traditional spin enthusiasts. He added that after the retirements of players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ravichandran Ashwin, India‘s red-ball squad is undergoing a significant transition. The team’s pursuit of a WTC final spot will depend on the performances of players such as Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, and Saransh Jain in Galle and Colombo.
Team Selection and Fitness Concerns
Kartik supported Dhruv Jurel retaining his place in the playing XI, even with Sarfaraz Khan returning to the squad as a replacement for Sai Sudharsan. He cited Jurel’s consistent performance and utility as a Test batter as reasons for his continued inclusion. Kartik stated that Jurel has fulfilled the team’s requirements, and he would prefer him to start in the playing XI.
While expressing confidence in Shubman Gill‘s batting prowess, Kartik highlighted the batter’s fitness as a significant concern. He mentioned Gill’s recent history of niggles and injuries, which have interrupted his availability. Kartik emphasised the importance of Gill remaining fully fit to lead the team through a crucial phase of the World Test Championship.
Kartik also warned that Sri Lanka could target India‘s batters, particularly with left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya in strong form. He observed that Sri Lanka has selected a considerable number of spinners, indicating their strategy to rely on spin against India. The India tour of Sri Lanka will be telecast live on Sony Sports Network and Sony LIV.
