England expected to appoint Stephen Fleming as Test coach

Stephen Fleming: England expected to appoint former New Zealand captain as Test coach

Fleming to Lead England Test Side

Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, is anticipated to be named the new England Test coach. This follows a series of interviews with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the past two weeks. Fleming is expected to work alongside his compatriot and former teammate, Brendon McCullum, who continues to manage England’s white-ball teams.

The appointment comes after McCullum’s dismissal as Test coach earlier this month due to a series of poor results and off-field incidents. McCullum initially had a strong start, winning 10 out of 12 Tests in his first year. However, since then, England has lost 18 and won 17 of their subsequent 37 Tests, and has not secured a multi-match series victory since December 2024.

Fleming’s relationship with McCullum, described as close friends and business associates, is believed to have given him an advantage over other candidates. McCullum has previously spoken about Fleming’s influence, highlighting his tactical leadership and man-management skills.

Extensive Coaching and Playing Experience

While Fleming has not previously served as a head coach for a national team, he brings significant experience from the franchise cricket circuit. He recently stepped down as head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings, a role he held for 17 years. During his tenure, he led CSK to five IPL titles from nine finals and two Champions League T20 crowns. He also coached sister teams Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket and Joburg Super Kings in SA20.

His coaching background also includes two seasons with Southern Brave in The Hundred, where the team reached the final in 2024. As a player, Fleming made 111 Test appearances for New Zealand, scoring over 7,000 runs at an average of 40.06. He remains the Black Caps’ most successful captain with 28 wins from 80 matches. He also has experience in English county cricket, having played for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, where he won the County Championship in 2005.

Fleming was previously approached by England in 2009 but declined the offer at that time, stating it was not the right moment for him.

Impact on England’s Test Future

If appointed, Fleming will have a role in selecting a new Test captain, working alongside director of men’s cricket Rob Key and national selector Marcus North. This follows the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket in June. Harry Brook, the current England vice-captain, had received backing from Stokes to be his successor, but was overlooked for the role earlier in the summer, partly due to a nightclub incident last winter.

It is currently uncertain whether Fleming will be in position to lead England for the three-Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin at Headingley on 19 August. There is a possibility that an interim coach, potentially assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, might oversee this series. Alternatively, Fleming’s tenure could commence with the tour of South Africa in December.

Other names linked to the coaching role included former England coach Andy Flower, who ruled himself out, and former Australian head coach Justin Langer, who stated he had not been contacted by the ECB. Former England batter Jonathan Trott, Richard Dawson, Gareth Batty, and Australians Tom Moody, Darren Lehmann, and Ryan Campbell were also among those considered.

The decision to remove McCullum followed a period of reflection by the ECB hierarchy, particularly after the 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand, during which Stokes announced his retirement in the third Test.

Key, a former England and Kent batter, maintained his position after these results and, along with a headhunting company, conducted interviews with potential candidates for the coaching role.
