Zandvoort: Verstappen extends Red Bull contract, Hadjar injured, Lawson returns

Mekies on Verstappen’s new deal, Hadjar and Lawson - Formula 1

Verstappen’s Contract Extension and Future in F1

Max Verstappen has extended his contract with Red Bull Racing, committing to the team until at least the end of 2030. This announcement was made during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend. Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies expressed his satisfaction with the deal, calling it “phenomenal news” for the team and for Formula 1.

Mekies highlighted the significance of Verstappen’s decision, especially following a challenging start to the 2026 season. He views it as a demonstration of trust in the team’s vision and culture. Verstappen, a four-time World Champion, has been with Red Bull since the beginning of his top-level career in the sport.

Verstappen himself revealed that he was closer to considering retirement than changing teams before signing the extension. His decision was influenced by ongoing discussions about the future of engine regulations in F1. He had previously voiced frustrations regarding the new hybrid engines introduced this year, particularly the need to constantly recover energy and the impact on racing enjoyment.

The driver noted that he had positive discussions with F1 and the FIA, and believes that improvements are being made. He also mentioned that the contract length could open doors for future considerations if V8 engines are reintroduced, referencing ongoing discussions about engine regulations due by 2031.

A factor in Verstappen’s decision to remain with Red Bull was the team’s flexibility, allowing him to participate in activities outside of Formula 1, such as the Nurburgring 24 Hours. He described his relationship with Mekies as “very good, very open and transparent.” While details of the new contract were not publicly disclosed, reports suggest it includes a salary increase and options for Verstappen to leave if performance expectations are not met.

Driver Changes: Hadjar’s Injury and Lawson’s Return

In other team news, Isack Hadjar, Verstappen’s 2026 teammate, will miss the Dutch Grand Prix due to a wrist injury sustained during the summer break. Mekies confirmed that Hadjar is recovering and that the team is taking a cautious approach, not wanting to risk his health. Hadjar has shown strong performance throughout the season, consistently improving in each session and race weekend.

This injury has led to Liam Lawson’s return to the senior Red Bull team as Hadjar’s temporary replacement. Mekies welcomed Lawson back, noting his strong performance in the first part of the season and his familiarity with the current generation of cars. Lawson’s return marks another chapter in his F1 career, following his debut at Zandvoort in 2023 and subsequent substitute appearances.

Lawson had previously been promoted to Red Bull and then returned to Racing Bulls. Mekies believes Lawson deserves this opportunity, acknowledging his efforts to rebuild his career and reputation. Yuki Tsunoda will take Lawson’s place at Racing Bulls, partnering with Arvid Lindblad.

Red Bull’s Goals for the Second Half of the Season

The Dutch Grand Prix marks the start of a busy second half of the 2026 season. Red Bull aims to join Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren as Grand Prix winners under the new F1 regulations. McLaren secured a victory in Hungary, highlighting the competitive nature of the current season.

Despite the unexpected driver reshuffling, Mekies remains focused on the team’s objective: winning. He stated that the team’s mood will not be high until they return to winning races. While acknowledging progress in closing the performance gap, Mekies admitted that the team does not currently have the pace to win in a fair fight.

Red Bull has made significant strides, reducing their deficit from over one second off the pace at the beginning of the year to approximately three-tenths behind the front-runners. Mekies credited the team in Milton Keynes for this improvement. The team remains determined to win races this year, recognizing that the tight competition means any of the top four teams could secure a victory if others falter.
