Ireland captain Paul Stirling returns for Afghanistan ODI series

Stirling’s Return and New Leadership
Paul Stirling is set to captain Ireland in the upcoming five-game One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan, marking his return from injury. This series will also be the first under the guidance of new head coach Gary Wilson, who took over shortly after Ireland’s 2-0 T20 series victory against India in June.
Stirling’s return is seen as a significant boost for the team, especially as they prepare for their first ODI series in over a year. He previously stepped down from the T20 captaincy following this year’s World Cup, but will now lead the ODI squad after recovering from a calf problem. His experience and leadership are expected to strengthen both the batting lineup and the overall leadership group within the team.
Wilson, a former Ireland wicketkeeper, expressed his enthusiasm for the squad he has selected, stating that it reflects the aggressive and positive style of cricket the team aims to play. He highlighted the healthy competition for places, noting that many players have impressed during the 15-month gap since Ireland’s last ODIs.
Emerging Talent and Injury Challenges
The series will see new faces in the Ireland ODI squad, with Jai Moondra, Ben Calitz, and Byron McDonough earning their maiden call-ups. Moondra, who performed well in the T20 series against India, has been included for the first time in the 50-over format. McDonough, a fast bowler, also received his first senior national team call-up after his role in helping Leinster Lightning secure the Inter-Provincial 50-over Cup title. Calitz has also been rewarded with his first ODI squad selection.

These selections underscore Cricket Ireland’s commitment to recognizing strong domestic performances and providing opportunities for emerging players. Moondra and Calitz, in particular, showcased their maturity during the T20I series victory over India, convincing selectors of their readiness for international 50-over cricket.
Despite these promising additions, Ireland will face the Afghanistan series with several key players sidelined due to injuries. Matt Hollard, who had a notable T20 series against India, will miss Wilson’s initial games in charge. Other players unavailable for selection include Josh Little, Craig Young, Barry McCarthy, Jordan Neil, and David Delaney. Their absence will test the depth of the squad, particularly the bowling attack, while also creating opportunities for younger players to step up.
Series Schedule and Preparation
The five-match ODI series will commence with two matches in Bready on August 5 and August 7. The action will then move to Stormont for the final three games, scheduled for August 10, August 12, and August 15.
This series marks Ireland’s first ODIs since a drawn series against the West Indies in May 2025. It will serve as crucial preparation for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, which are set to take place at the beginning of next year. Wilson emphasized the “great rivalry” that has developed between Ireland and Afghanistan over the years, anticipating another closely contested series.
The blend of experienced players like Andrew Balbirnie, Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, Lorcan Tucker, and George Dockrell with the enthusiasm of newcomers is expected to be a key factor for Ireland. The team aims to be dynamic and seek opportunities to pressure the opposition, with a focus on consistently looking for wickets with the ball and demonstrating a “never say die attitude” in the field.
The full Ireland squad for the series includes: Paul Stirling (captain), Mark Adair, Andrew Balbirnie, Ben Calitz, Curtis Campher, Cade Carmichael, George Dockrell, Gavin Hoey, Andrew McBrine, Liam McCarthy, Byron McDonough, Jai Moondra, Harry Tector, and Lorcan Tucker.
