Dublin: Ireland names Men’s ODI squad for Afghanistan series, including new call-ups

Cricket Ireland has announced the Ireland Men’s squad for the initial three matches of the upcoming One-Day International series against Afghanistan. The five-match series is scheduled to be held at Bready and Stormont, commencing on August 5, 2026. This series marks the first assignment for newly appointed Head Coach Gary Wilson, who will lead the coaching unit.
The squad sees the return of captain Paul Stirling, who missed the recent India T20I series due to an injury sustained at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. His leadership will be crucial as the team transitions back to the ODI format after a 15-month hiatus from bilateral ODI assignments.
New Faces and Injury Concerns
The selection includes several new additions to the ODI setup. Jai Moondra, who impressed during the recent India T20I series, earns his debut opportunity in the 50-over format. Alongside him, Byron McDonough, a 24-year-old pace bowler, receives his first call-up to the national side following strong performances in the recently concluded Inter-Provincial 50-over Cup, where he helped Leinster Lightning secure the title. Ben Calitz also gets his first ODI squad call-up, having previously played T20I cricket.

National Selector Andrew White expressed enthusiasm for the new inclusions, stating that both Moondra and McDonough bring distinct attributes that are expected to make a significant impact. White also highlighted Gavin Hoey’s potential as a wicket-taking threat in the middle overs with his ability to spin the ball, and Ben Calitz’s dynamic batting approach, which provides valuable options in the middle to lower order.
However, the squad announcement also brings to light ongoing injury concerns. A number of players are unavailable for selection due to injury or are undergoing return-to-play protocols. These include Josh Little, Matt Hollard, Craig Young, Barry McCarthy, Jordan Neill, and David Delany. The fitness of these players will be assessed after the first three games, with the possibility of squad changes for the final two ODIs.
Coaching Perspectives and Series Details
Head Coach Gary Wilson conveyed his anticipation for the series, noting the competitive rivalry that has developed between Ireland and Afghanistan over the years. He emphasised the team’s intention to play dynamically, seeking opportunities to pressure the opposition and consistently look for wickets. Wilson also mentioned that the team aims to be known for a “never say die attitude” synonymous with strong Irish sides.

The series will be Ireland’s first men’s bilateral ODI assignment since hosting the West Indies in May 2025. Former England batter Jonathan Trott will join the Irish camp as a consultant for the first two ODIs, bringing his experience from previously serving as the Afghan national team’s head coach.
